TCM Summer Health Guide: Staying Balanced in Hot Weather

5 min read

How to maintain health during summer according to TCM principles? Learn ways to balance your body in hot weather.

Summer is when Yang energy in nature reaches its peak, and the body must adapt to handle the heat. Traditional Chinese Medicine offers guidance for summer health care to prevent illness and maintain body balance.

During summer, avoid spicy, hot-natured, and fried foods as they increase internal heat. Eat foods that help clear heat, such as watermelon, cucumber, mung beans, and bitter melon. Drink warm or room-temperature water rather than ice-cold beverages.

Despite the heat, avoid staying in extremely cold air-conditioning constantly, as cold may invade the body causing colds, muscle aches, or diarrhea. Set air-conditioning to moderate temperatures and avoid frequent transitions between air-conditioned and outdoor spaces.

Summer sleep patterns should follow nature—going to bed slightly later than usual and waking early. Take short afternoon naps to recharge. Avoid intense exercise during peak heat hours.

If you experience internal heat, frequent thirst, or fatigue from the heat, acupuncture or Chinese herbs can help clear heat and restore balance. Consult a TCM practitioner for appropriate recommendations.
