Acupuncture for Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation

5 min read

Acupuncture helps stroke patients recover, improving mobility and quality of life after stroke or paralysis.

Stroke is a leading cause of disability in adults, resulting in paralysis, muscle weakness, speech difficulties, and swallowing problems. Early and continuous rehabilitation is crucial for returning to near-normal life. Acupuncture is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as effective for stroke treatment.

In TCM, stroke is called 'Zhong Feng' (中風), caused by wind and phlegm blocking meridians, obstructing Qi and blood flow. Acupuncture helps open meridians, stimulate blood flow to the brain, and restore nervous system function.

Various acupuncture techniques are used in stroke rehabilitation. Scalp acupuncture (头皮针) stimulates brain areas controlling movement. Body acupuncture along meridians helps restore arm and leg muscle function. Facial acupuncture helps with speech and swallowing.

Stroke patients should begin acupuncture as soon as their condition stabilizes, typically within 2-4 weeks after the stroke. Continuous treatment 2-3 times per week for 3-6 months helps patients recover mobility, speech, and daily living abilities.

Acupuncture should be combined with physical therapy and occupational therapy for best results. Family plays an important role in care and encouraging patients to do exercises regularly. Many patients are able to walk again, use their hands, and live more independently after treatment.
