Acupuncture for Tennis Elbow: Natural Treatment for Elbow Pain

Elbow pain from tennis elbow or lateral epicondylitis - can acupuncture help? Learn about causes and treatment approaches.

Tennis Elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, is characterized by pain on the outside of the elbow. It results from inflammation of the tendons connecting the forearm muscles to the elbow bone. It's common in athletes and those who perform repetitive arm movements such as lifting heavy objects, typing, or cooking.

In TCM perspective, tennis elbow results from blockage of Qi and blood in the elbow area, possibly caused by cold-wind or dampness entering the meridians. Acupuncture helps stimulate blood circulation, reduce inflammation, and release muscle tension.

The practitioner inserts needles at points around the elbow, arm, and relevant points along the large intestine and small intestine meridians that pass through the elbow. Some treatments may combine electrical stimulation or cupping for enhanced effectiveness.

Many patients report reduced pain after 4-6 treatment sessions. However, results depend on symptom severity and duration of condition. Practitioners often recommend resting the affected arm and using an elbow support brace during treatment.

Acupuncture is an interesting option for those who prefer to avoid pain medication or injections. Consult a TCM practitioner for assessment and an appropriate treatment plan, and follow recommendations to prevent recurrence.
