Acupuncture for Sciatica: Relief from Leg Pain

5 min read

Suffering from back pain radiating down your leg? Learn how acupuncture can help treat sciatica and what results to expect.

Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve is compressed or irritated, commonly caused by herniated discs, spinal degeneration, or piriformis muscle compression. Symptoms include lower back pain, hip pain radiating down the leg, numbness, tingling, and weakness. In TCM, this condition results from stagnation of Qi and blood, combined with accumulation of cold and dampness.

Acupuncture for sciatica is supported by scientific evidence. A 2024 study found that patients receiving 10 acupuncture sessions over 4 weeks experienced reduced leg pain and improved physical function compared to the control group, with results lasting up to one year. Acupuncture works by stimulating endorphin release, reducing inflammation, and modulating nervous system function.

Acupuncture points for sciatica follow the Bladder and Gallbladder meridians: Huantiao (GB30) at the hip, Fengshi (GB31) on the outer thigh, Yanglingquan (GB34) below the knee, Weizhong (BL40) behind the knee, and Kunlun (BL60) at the ankle. Point selection is customized based on pain location and individual causes.

Many patients feel improvement after 2-3 acupuncture sessions. For chronic cases from herniated discs, treatment may take 4-6 weeks or longer. Acupuncture may be combined with cupping and moxibustion to enhance effectiveness, especially when cold accumulation is a factor.

While acupuncture may not permanently cure sciatica, it effectively relieves symptoms and improves quality of life. Patients should also avoid prolonged sitting, maintain good posture, perform stretching exercises, and avoid heavy lifting for best results.
