Acupuncture for Diabetes: Balancing Blood Sugar Naturally

5 min read

Acupuncture helps control blood sugar levels, reduce diabetes complications, and complement conventional treatment.

Diabetes is a chronic condition increasingly common in modern society. It occurs when the body cannot produce or effectively use insulin, leading to high blood sugar. In TCM, diabetes is called 'Xiao Ke' (消渴), meaning wasting and thirsting, caused by Yin deficiency and internal heat affecting the lungs, stomach, and kidneys.

Acupuncture helps diabetes patients in several ways: stimulating pancreatic function to improve insulin production, increasing cell sensitivity to insulin, helping the body use sugar more efficiently, reducing cravings for sweet and fatty foods, and reducing stress that affects blood sugar levels.

Acupuncture points used for diabetes include Zusanli (足三里) for digestive function, Sanyinjiao (三陰交) for balancing spleen, liver, and kidney, Neiguan (內關) for stress reduction, and Taixi (太溪) for kidney nourishment. Points are selected based on each patient's symptoms and condition.

Acupuncture can be safely used alongside conventional diabetes treatment. It helps reduce medication side effects and may help some patients reduce medication dosage (under medical supervision). It also helps relieve diabetes complications such as peripheral neuropathy and nerve pain.

Diabetes patients interested in acupuncture should plan for 8-12 sessions, starting with 1-2 sessions per week. This should be combined with diet control, regular exercise, and blood sugar monitoring as recommended by your physician. TCM emphasizes holistic care for sustainable health.
