Allergic rhinitis or hay fever is a problem many people face. Common symptoms include repeated sneezing, clear runny nose, nasal congestion, itchy nose, itchy eyes, and sinusitis. In TCM, allergies result from weak defensive Qi (衛氣) combined with Lung and Spleen imbalance, making the body sensitive to external triggers.
Acupuncture for allergies has two approaches: treating acute symptoms and strengthening immunity. For acute symptoms, points like Yingxiang (迎香) beside the nose, Hegu (合谷) on the hand, and Yintang (印堂) between the eyebrows are stimulated to immediately relieve nasal congestion and runny nose.
For long-term treatment, the focus is on strengthening defensive Qi and balancing the Lungs and Spleen. Points include Feishu (肺俞) to nourish the Lungs, and Zusanli (足三里) to strengthen the Spleen and boost immunity. Herbs like Huang Qi (黃芪) and Bai Zhu (白朮) help reinforce Qi and immune function.
Allergy patients treated with TCM continuously for 2-3 months typically experience fewer and less severe symptoms, with reduced dependence on antihistamines. Treatment before the allergy season (such as before winter) provides even better prevention.
Additional recommendations for allergy sufferers include avoiding triggers such as dust, dust mites, and pet dander, keeping the bedroom and bedding clean, avoiding very cold and raw foods, exercising regularly to boost immunity, and getting adequate rest.
