After Cupping Therapy: 5 Essential Aftercare Tips

4 min read

Just had a cupping therapy session in Bangkok? Follow these 5 essential aftercare tips recommended by experienced TCM physicians to support your recovery and get the most from your treatment.

  • Avoid cold showers or bathing for at least 2–4 hours after your cupping therapy session, as the pores remain open and the skin is more sensitive than usual. According to TCM principles, exposure to cold or wind during this period may allow external cold to enter the body, potentially causing discomfort or increased muscle aches. When you do shower, use lukewarm water only.

  • Drink plenty of warm water after your session to help the body process and eliminate waste products more effectively. Many patients report feeling slightly thirsty or mildly fatigued following cupping therapy, which is a normal response — staying well hydrated supports the lymphatic system and overall recovery. Avoid cold drinks, iced beverages, and alcohol for the remainder of the day.

  • Avoid alcohol, spicy foods, and heavy greasy meals for at least 24 hours after cupping therapy, as these can interfere with the body's natural recovery process and may reduce the benefit of your treatment. Opt instead for easy-to-digest, lightly seasoned warm foods such as soups, congee, or steamed vegetables to support your body while it heals.

  • The circular marks left by cupping therapy are completely normal and not a cause for concern — they result from increased blood circulation and the release of stagnation beneath the skin surface. Marks typically fade on their own within 3 to 7 days; darker marks may indicate areas of greater stagnation and can take slightly longer to disappear. You do not need to apply any cream or treatment unless advised by your TCM physician.

  • If you experience any unusual symptoms after your cupping session — such as fever, severe or worsening pain, significant skin blistering, or marks that have not faded after two weeks — please contact the clinic and speak with one of our experienced TCM physicians. The team at Hua Yi Tang Clinic is always available to advise you and ensure your treatment experience is safe and comfortable.
